In July, the Grievance Settlement Board ordered the provincial government to pay Ranger almost $100,000 — the largest damages award in the board’s history. It ruled that the government utterly failed to protect Ranger from a “poisoned” workplace, and later failed to find him other suitable work. His decision to do so made him physically sick. It cost him a job he loved and by all accounts did well. Connaught and Glen Elm will no be open on Mondays. Everybody knows you can’t do that, and you can’t be obvious about discriminating against people. Workplaces that are highly competitive and politicized seem especially prone to bullying. Some reward bullying by encouraging managers to push out workers perceived to be low performers. That has been found to be a particular danger in companies that are downsizing. For Bob Ranger, a barrel-chested 52-year-old, being gay had never been an issue. That changed when he became a guard in provincial jails, where “boys’ clubs” and a code of silence prevail — and bullies endure. We recognize the impacts of colonization on our Two Spirit and Queer Indigenous communities. Before colonization, Two-Spirit people were included and respected as valued community members, often holding revered roles such as healers, matchmakers, and counsellors, among many others. As part of the colonization process, there has been an attempted erasure of Two-Spirit people. The western religious values and belief systems that were imposed on Indigenous people condemned any sort of sexual or gender diversity, and Two-Spirit and Queer Indigenous people were killed or forced into assimilation and hiding. One of many lasting impacts of colonization on Two-Spirit and Queer people, is an increased level of homophobia and transphobia within many Indigenous communities. Two-spirit is a term sometimes used by Indigenous people to describe gay, lesbian, transgender or non-binary people. The flag has two feathers on top of the traditional rainbow pattern. It looked, at the time, like an ever-upwards spiralling trend. The rest of the time, he bounced around from a posting in probation and parole, to the Ministry of Finance, where no one cared about his sexual orientation but he was ill-suited for the job. In 1990, Ranger landed a part-time job as a corrections officer at a “bucket jail” — a small prison — in L’Orignal, west of Hawkesbury on the Ottawa River. It was built in 1825, and until it was decommissioned in 1998 was the oldest functioning prison in Ontario. Ranger received a high-level apology in August from Stephen Rhodes, deputy minister of correctional services, and assurances that “valuable lessons” had been learned. Four days later, Rhodes took aim at provincial jails with a memo to corrections staff under the subject heading, “The Code of Silence.” He denounced the practice, which allows bad behaviour to go unreported, as unacceptable. Instead of the 501, there’s the popular Churchmouse and Firkin down the street, a first category business replaced by a second category chain pub, gay-friendly rather than gay, and even that more by nurture than nature. The newest shops to come to Church have been Subway, Ginger’s, Hero Burger and Pizzaiolo. Pizza Nova doubled its size, and the standard complement of ethnic restaurants, in the form of Sakura, A La Turque, Yefseis and Crepe It Up, have moved in. The banks never changed their posters, and when the Flight Centre opened up a few years ago, it didn’t feel the need to either. Mandy Goodhandy opened a bar down at Richmond, but for the most part, the gay bit of Church Street is where its been for as long as most of us can remember. At the top it starts around Isabella, where you’re greeted by Java Jive’s pink sign on the right, and a big banner that says “There’s no place like home” on the left, courtesy of Robin Wood Management, who rent out the apartments at 608. It ends at the site of many whimpers and bangs over the decades, The Barn and The Stables, the club and bar, respectively, where thousands of men have come and gone over the years. I found Karen’s relationship with Miss Francina, an older transwoman with a loyal group of customers, really touching, and Madame Damnable herself steals every scene she’s in. The romance between Karen and Priya moved a little quickly for my taste — Karen falls in love almost at first sight — but other than that, I really enjoyed the plot as well. The best example of this was This Ain’t the Rosedale Library, a small bookstore set up by two young American men, Dan Bazuin and Charlie Huisken, who came up during the draft dodging years. It wasn’t a gay bookstore and Bazuin and Huisken weren’t gay. An urban term used throughout Australia to describe an ecstasy pill. It originated in Perth and was made notorious by a large community of druggies starting in 2003. It was meant to replace the words such as pills, ecstasy tablets, poppers, and flippers, all of which mean the same thing, but have a negative connotation. Basically, anyone using the term Bingo was considered elite. As such, today it is used liberally by many party-goers in Oz, although the appeal of the word “bingo” was based around the fact that not many people knew what it meant and that it required explanation. It also helped justify the use of the drug since it was suddenly “hip” to explain the exclusive bingo talk. Annabeth Albert grew up sneaking romance novels under the bed covers.
